GT IT-1

Maxi test September 2005

Highlights: GT’s Internal Transmission 1 (IT-1), was designed to improve drivetrain durability, decrease unsprung weight (weight directly attached to the wheel or swingarm that affects suspension performance), increase reliability and pedaling performance. GT wanted to address the problem of wheel path using their internal transmission bike. They wanted the IT-1 to be able to handle different terrain without losing speed or affecting its handling. The frame’s internal transmission is located in the middle. It uses a Shimano Nexus 8-speed transmission that has a wide gear range to allow for quick ascents or slow descents.

Best quote: The IT-1 pedals smooth on flats and downhills for a nine inch travel bike.

Bottom line: The 2005 IT-3 cms geometry is nimble and easy to handle. This bike would be great at any downhill or mountain resort. The internal transmission performed flawlessly, despite being very unusual, so a gravity fan could not ask for better components. GT designed the IT-1 with these goals: improved drivetrain durability, better suspension performance, reduced maintenance, and center weight distribution. The only problem is that it’s a new technology, so maintenance can be tricky.
