SOUTHRIDGE WINTER SERIES XC #2

Winters for Kinder: Right now, Southern California.
California is the only country that races mountain bikes. It’s almost.
Everywhere else it’s cold and wet.

Snow distraction: Mike Lee (GBr/SoCal Specialized), Waylon Smith (GBr/SoCal Specialized), Miguel Valdez and Eric Bierman lead Bear Valley Bikes Michael Hansen (right), Romolo Forcino and Steve Kinney, Lyle Warner in the pro-start.

Pro podium: Miguel Valadez, Robert Herber (Vail Lake Racing–Ellsworth), Michael Lee(Trek-VW), Eric Bierman/Steven K), Lyle Warner (Helens/Subaru GF) placed 1st-5th.

Entrepreneur: Steve Kinney, the boss of Steven K, is a long-standing SoCal pro. He spends his spare time building bikes, producing his own tubeless system, and shoveling snow. He also sponsors a race team.

No water puddles. MBAs Eddie Arnet and David Ackerman spent the weekend honorary members of Sho-Air/RockNRoad. It rained for 5 days before this event.

Roost: Chad Walton sets up his Scott for the busy carousal circuit that winds through the bird sanctuary and into the start/finish. He was 2nd among 27-34 Experts.

Young gun: Southridge 2 was Platinum Performances’ 2008 debut. Ian Mcfarlane speeds towards Southridge Parks picnic areas. Ian was the 1st 18-and under Expert.

From Basotho Ponies and bikes: Elizabeth Schilling, horse EMT, is always at Southridge. Elizabeth was 2nd among 35+ sport women.

Speed swap meet: Southridge is the only place where you can buy used race bikes and parts from downhill legends Kyle Strait and Colin Bailey. Every race has it.

Preflight: It’s easy to clear the double from the right side, according to SRCs Don Jackson and Shimano kids race participants. Tanner (right), has the course so well-figured that he ignores grandpa Don

SOUTHRIDGE WINTER SERIES XC #2
Fontana, CAs Southridge Park hosted the official launch of the 2008 mountain biking season for almost two decades. The Winter Series, which includes five races, leads directly into the NORBA National opener in March. Race 2 had perfect weather with 70 degrees and sunny skies. There was no wind. The sandy course was able to withstand the heavy rains that fell during the weekend. Many said the conditions were among the best they had ever seen.

Racers will be able to enjoy a 7-mile loop of singletrack with lots and wind on the current Southridge Racing Club Winter Series circuit. Four riders from Platinum Performance Team came to test their early season condition. Ian Mcfarlane won the 18-and under class. Amanda Schaper finished in 1st in the 34-and Under Beginner Women class. Bobby Langin proved that he has not lost any conditioning since his championship-winning cyclocross seasons. Bobby proved that Southridge 1’s fastest expert time was not a fluke. He was again victorious today, finishing in 1st place at Southridge 1 with a 45-54 Expert Expert finish. This was also his fastest expert time. Platinum Team Captain Todd Booth finished 34-44 Expert in 2nd place. Todd was on the rivet with Scott Marcoe and Tim Zandbergen, both from Sho-Air/RockNRoad. Todd struggled to get Tim back on the climbs, while Tim pulled away from the descents. As Marcoe started to fall back, Bobby Langin, a blazing runner, moved up from his earlier start row and caught Todd. In an effort to get Todd closer to Tim, the Platinum teammates worked together. The effort was futile as Tim held strong and maintained a gap of 1 minute at the finish.
